ChatGPT Images 2.6 Adds GIFs: A Guide for Online Sellers
On this page· 7 sections
OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.6 on November 4, 2026. The image model update lets users create animated GIFs directly in ChatGPT from a text prompt or an uploaded photo. For online stores and small businesses, it offers a new way to produce moving promotional content without a separate video editor.
The timing matters in Indonesia. The government has scheduled Harbolnas 2026, the national online shopping day event, for December 10 to 16, and many sellers are now preparing product photos, banners, and social media posts in bulk.
How GIFs work in ChatGPT Images 2.6
According to OpenAI’s announcement on its developer forum, users can turn a prompt or an image into an animated GIF. Once the GIF is ready, they can change its playback speed, edit individual frames, and set it to loop. The Next Web noted that ChatGPT could not produce a GIF in a single step before this release.
A GIF works like a flipbook. The model creates several images with small differences and strings them together into one short animated file. According to The Decoder, the new model keeps a character recognizable from frame to frame, something earlier models reportedly struggled with.
The release also adds reference images. Users can save images of themselves, their pets, or characters and reuse them without uploading them again. A seller could use this to keep a store mascot looking the same across different campaigns.
The GIF feature is rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop, and mobile apps, according to The Next Web and The Decoder. OpenAI also says Images 2.6 makes image generation in ChatGPT faster. That speed claim comes from OpenAI and has not been independently tested.
ChatGPT Images through 2026
Images 2.6 is OpenAI’s third image model update in seven months. In April 2026, OpenAI released Images 2.0, its first image model that plans an image before drawing it, The Next Web reported.
Images 2.5 followed on September 8, 2026. According to Unite.AI, that version cut generation latency by up to 50 percent compared with Images 2.0 and added templates for flyers and product photos. It also introduced two model tracks for developers: Flare for speed and Sunburst for quality.

Usage has grown along the way. OpenAI says people now create more than 4 billion images a week across ChatGPT and the API, up from 3 billion in September. That figure covers all image generation, so it does not show how widely the GIF feature is used.
The GIF feature also arrives months after OpenAI shut down Sora, its AI video app, in March 2026, according to The Next Web. GIFs give users a short, lightweight motion format inside ChatGPT without a separate app.
Options for developers in the API
For teams building their own software, OpenAI added two new API models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst. An API (application programming interface) lets other software call OpenAI’s models automatically, for example from a store’s catalog system.
According to the developer forum announcement, Flare can generate an image in as little as six seconds, while Sunburst produces higher-quality images and stays more consistent across repeated edits. OpenAI also says image generation in the API is now 50 percent faster, without specifying the baseline.

Two ChatGPT features are also coming to the API: image markup, which lets users point to the part of an image they want changed, and SVG export. SVG is a line-based image format that stays sharp at any size, which makes it useful for icons and logos on websites.
The split suggests how each model fits. Flare suits high-volume work, such as previewing hundreds of product image variations. Sunburst suits flagship campaign visuals that need clean detail. Developers who want to add this kind of feature to a store app can start with a small pilot, a common first step in artificial intelligence projects.
Details OpenAI has yet to share
Several details are missing from the announcement and early coverage. OpenAI has not stated the maximum GIF length, resolution, or frame count. Usage limits for each subscription tier have not been published either.
The announcement also does not say whether GIF creation is available through the API or only in ChatGPT and Codex. For API pricing, OpenAI points to its official pricing page.
On content provenance, the available sources do not say whether GIFs made with Images 2.6 carry metadata or watermarks that identify them as AI-generated. This matters in Indonesia, where the communications ministry, Komdigi, is studying an AI content labeling rule aimed at AI developers.
What this means for online sellers
Sellers can now create a spinning product shot, a waving mascot, or an animated discount notice with a single prompt. The opportunity is real because online shopping in Indonesia leans heavily on visual content. Katadata reported that the government is targeting Rp40 trillion in Harbolnas 2026 transactions, with social commerce now counted in the total. The same report found that 80 percent of consumers bought a product after watching a review through a live shopping feature.
The following steps can help AI-made GIFs support sales without creating complaints.
Start from a real product photo. Upload a photo of the item you actually sell, then ask ChatGPT to animate it. This is safer than asking the model to draw the product from scratch, because colors, shapes, and sizes are easier to keep accurate.
Check every frame. Since frames can be edited one by one, use that to check details such as packaging logos, price labels, and quantities. AI images sometimes alter small text or add details that do not exist.

Label content honestly. If an animation shows a setting or a model that is not real, add a note that it was made with AI. The habit builds trust with buyers and makes it easier to adapt if an AI labeling rule takes effect.
Protect personal data. The reference image feature stores photos of people for reuse. Do not upload customers’ or employees’ faces without their consent, in line with Indonesia’s Undang-Undang Nomor 27 Tahun 2022 tentang Pelindungan Data Pribadi (the Personal Data Protection Law).
Test where the GIF will appear. Check the file size and format requirements of the marketplace, store website, and social platforms you use. A heavy GIF can slow down a product page, especially for buyers on mobile networks.
For retail chains that manage hundreds of products, image generation can be connected directly to the catalog system through the API. That kind of setup needs approval steps, version storage, and quality checks, as covered in our retail management solutions.
Frequently asked questions
Can free ChatGPT users make GIFs?
According to The Next Web and The Decoder, the feature is rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop, and mobile apps. OpenAI has not detailed how many GIFs each plan allows.
How long can a ChatGPT GIF be?
The maximum length, resolution, and frame count have not been announced. Users can adjust playback speed, edit frames one by one, and loop the animation.
What is the difference between GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst?
Both are developer models in the API. Flare prioritizes speed and can generate an image in about six seconds, while Sunburst prioritizes quality and consistency across repeated edits.
GIF creation makes it easier for small stores to produce their own moving promotions, as long as the result stays true to the product being sold. If you want to connect AI image generation to a catalog or store website, the Merakit team can help design the workflow from pilot to daily use.
