Mistral AI released the weights for Mistral Large 4, a model of roughly 1 trillion parameters nicknamed “Le Chonk”, on October 29, 2026. Anyone can now download the model from Hugging Face and run it on their own servers. For banks and fintech companies that are reluctant to send customer data to outside AI services, the release adds an option worth weighing carefully.

What Mistral released

Mistral, the French AI company, first introduced Mistral Large 4 as a preview on October 6, 2026. According to CNBC, access at that stage was limited to developers, cybersecurity leaders, and state authorities. Mistral described the model as the most capable open model built outside China.

Three weeks later, the company opened up the weights. SiliconANGLE reported that the release version received three more weeks of reinforcement learning and customer testing after the preview ended. TechCrunch noted that businesses and governments can now download the model and deploy it on their own infrastructure.

Weights are the numbers produced by training, and they hold what a model has learned. With a closed model, the weights stay on the developer’s servers and customers reach the model through an API. With an open-weight model, the files can be copied and run anywhere, including in a data center with no internet connection.

Besides the download, the model is offered through Mistral Studio, the Mistral API, OpenRouter, Microsoft Foundry, and NVIDIA-hosted endpoints, according to Mistral’s announcement. API pricing is $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens.

Specifications and hardware

Mistral Large 4 uses a mixture-of-experts (MoE) design, which means only part of its roughly 1 trillion parameters is used for each token. The Hugging Face model card lists about 52 billion active parameters, or 49 billion if the embedding and output layers are excluded. That makes a very large model cheaper to run than a dense model of the same size.

The same model card lists a context window of 1 million tokens, enough to process very long documents in a single request. Mistral also offers three reasoning levels (low, medium, and high), so teams can match the depth of reasoning to the task.

Cheaper to run still means heavy. According to ITdaily, self-hosting the model requires about 1.1 TB of GPU memory, or 610 GB for the compressed NVFP4 version. The example setup it cites is a single server with eight Nvidia B200 GPUs. The NVFP4 checkpoint is designed for Blackwell-generation GPUs.

For most organizations in Indonesia, those numbers mean a large hardware purchase or a dedicated GPU server rented from a local data center. The alternative is the API, which costs far less up front but sends data outside the organization.

Performance claims, limits, and license

Mistral calls Mistral Large 4 the best open-weight model for coding. Figures published by the company include:

  • A Terminal-Bench 4.0 score that rose from 28% in the preview to 41%.
  • A score of 48% on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, which Mistral says matches the Chinese open model GLM-5.3 while using 47% fewer tokens per task.
  • A score of 73.3% on FinWorkBench, a benchmark of finance tasks, second among open models after Kimi K3.
  • A score of 51% on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, which measures cybersecurity task ability.
  • An average refusal rate of 96.6% on malicious cyber requests in Mistral’s own testing.

All of these figures come from Mistral or from benchmarks Mistral cites. Neither the TechCrunch nor the SiliconANGLE coverage includes an independent evaluation. CNBC also noted that the model still trails the frontier in some areas, including coding.

Mistral raises a caveat of its own. Its announcement says a review of live traffic found the model refusing attacks on real targets, but also saw a potential for the model to help with real attacks. The company says it is adjusting its guardrails. A specialized cybersecurity variant is kept separate and offered only to vetted partners.

Sources also differ on the scale of training. CNBC reported that the model was trained on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs, while SiliconANGLE put the figure at 3,800. Both say the training took place in Mistral’s own European data centers.

Read the license before deploying

Open weights come with conditions. Mistral Large 4 is released under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight License, which Mistral describes as a modified MIT license. The model may be used, modified, fine-tuned, and used commercially.

The exception is Model-as-a-Service businesses, meaning companies that sell access to the model to others. They must obtain a separate commercial license from Mistral. A bank running the model for internal work falls outside that group, but a technology vendor planning to sell an AI service built on the model to banks needs to account for it.

Speaking to TechCrunch about cyber defense, Pierre Stock, Mistral’s VP of Science, said the model offers “Access that can’t be cut off by definition because the model is open-weighted.” We covered another open release, from China, in our piece on Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3.1 Pro. Mistral Large 4 adds a European option with a different license and different safety claims.

What this means for banks and fintech companies

Financial institutions handle data covered by Indonesia’s personal data protection law, Undang-Undang Nomor 27 Tahun 2022 tentang Pelindungan Data Pribadi (Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection). That makes AI services that process customer data abroad a decision to weigh carefully. An open-weight model lets AI run inside a bank’s own network, so credit files, complaint records, or internal source code never have to leave it.

A model this large calls for a staged decision. Practical steps:

  1. Start with one clear use case, such as summarizing credit documents, supporting the customer complaints team, or reviewing internal application code.
  2. Test through the API with synthetic data first. This is inexpensive and enough to judge answer quality, including in Indonesian. Compare it with models in the tens of billions of parameters, which can handle many banking tasks on one or two GPUs.
  3. Calculate the full cost of self-hosting, including GPUs, power, cooling, the operations team, and model updates, then compare it with API costs at the same volume.
  4. Bring in risk and compliance teams early, with rules on access, usage logging, and how model answers will be tested.

Four steps for banks before running Mistral Large 4 on their own servers

Governance needs to be prepared at the same time. The Perbanas and IBM survey we covered in our article on AI governance in Indonesian banks put the average AI governance maturity of Indonesian banks at 2.74 on a 5-point scale. Rules for access and model testing should be in place before a model touches customer data.

Merakit helps financial institutions design and test AI deployments through its artificial intelligence services and financial services solutions, from model selection to monitoring once a system is live.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mistral Large 4 free?

The weights can be downloaded at no cost and used commercially. The main expense is the hardware needed to run it. Companies that sell access to the model as a service need a separate commercial license from Mistral.

Can the model run on a laptop or a single GPU?

The full model cannot. Even the compressed NVFP4 version needs about 610 GB of GPU memory, which means a server with several data-center GPUs. Smaller models are a more realistic choice for modest hardware.

Does Mistral Large 4 support Indonesian?

Mistral says the model is fluent in more than 160 languages, but it does not detail its Indonesian performance. Organizations should test answer quality themselves with the documents and terminology they use every day.

Closing thoughts

The release of the Mistral Large 4 weights shows that large AI models are no longer available only from a handful of API providers. For banks and fintech companies, the opportunity to keep data inside their own network is real, and so is the cost. If your organization is weighing AI models for sensitive data, the Merakit team can help you design a measured pilot.
