Amazon Alexa Tablets Replace Fire Tablets With Android
On this page· 7 sections
Amazon announced three Alexa Tablets on October 8, 2026, replacing its Fire tablet line. The devices run Android with Google Play access, include the Alexa+ assistant, and have been on sale since October 14 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Prices start at $229.99.
Three models, prices, and release dates
Amazon is selling three models: the Alexa Tablet 8, the Alexa Tablet 11, and the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. The numbers roughly track screen size. The Tablet 8 has an 8.7-inch display, the Tablet 11 an 11-inch display, and the Tablet 12 Pro a 12-inch display. According to TechCrunch, the 12 Pro has a 120Hz screen in a 6.5 mm body, while the Tablet 11 uses a 2.5K display at 90Hz.
US starting prices are $229.99 for the Tablet 8, $329.99 for the Tablet 11, and $499.99 for the Tablet 12 Pro. The 12 Pro is also offered with an anti-glare Nanomatte display for $549.99. Engadget reports that the base Tablet 8 and Tablet 11 show lockscreen ads, and removing them costs an extra $20. Amazon also sells a Pro Pen for $89.99 and a Pro Keyboard for $149.99, according to iClarified. Amazon says the two accessories turn the Tablet 12 Pro into a full workstation, per TechCrunch. That claim needs independent reviews, especially for heavy work such as editing long documents or large spreadsheets.

Sales began on October 14 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Five days later, on October 19, the tablets went on sale in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Availability in Indonesia has not been announced. Amazon is also releasing Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, announced a day earlier, on October 7. Each bundle includes the tablet, a kid-proof case, and one year of Amazon Kids+. The version for preschoolers aged three and up has a soft bumper case, while the version for ages six and up has a slim hard case with a kickstand.
Engadget notes that Amazon refreshed many other devices the same month. The standard Kindle starts at $150, the Kindle Paperwhite at $200 with ads, and the Kindle Colorsoft at $290. The Kindle remains the dedicated choice for reading, while the Alexa Tablet offers a color screen with full Android apps.

From Fire OS to Android
The biggest change is the software. Fire tablets have run Fire OS, Amazon’s own version of Android that relies on the Amazon Appstore. Alexa Tablets run Android and open Google Play from day one, so apps such as YouTube, Netflix, and Gmail install directly. Engadget and HotHardware both say the version is Android 16.
The change also affects app developers. For years, apps missing from the Amazon Appstore were hard to install on Fire tablets, so app choice was more limited. With Google Play, the available catalog matches that of a typical Android phone.
Amazon told TechCrunch that this is a new product line with new hardware and a new operating system, not a renamed Fire tablet. Separately, Amazon devices chief Panos Panay told Bloomberg that the Fire tablet line will be phased out, as reported by iClarified. Fire tablets already in circulation will keep receiving security updates.

Long-term software support remains an open question. The coverage we reviewed does not say how many years Amazon will guarantee Android updates for Alexa Tablets. Buyers weighing a device’s lifespan should wait for that detail from Amazon.
Alexa+ on the tablet screen
According to iClarified, Alexa+ launched nationwide in the United States in February. Every Alexa Tablet has Alexa+ built into the system. Users can say “Alexa” or tap an Ask Alexa button to ask questions and control smart home devices. A feature called On-Screen Intelligence lets Alexa read what is on the screen and offer contextual help. Amazon’s example is a user browsing trail listings who asks which hike suits them best.
All models also include a Kindle reading mode that silences notifications and reduces blue light. For the Tablet 12 Pro, Amazon claims nearly three times the processing performance and nine times the graphics performance of any tablet it has shipped before. That claim comes from Amazon, and the coverage we reviewed does not include independent testing.
A similar approach, an AI assistant working inside everyday devices, is also visible on phones. We covered it in our look at the OPPO Find X10 and Manus Agent Mode.
What this means for businesses and schools
Google Play support makes the Alexa Tablet a sensible work device for shops, warehouses, and classrooms. Many point-of-sale, field survey, and learning apps already exist for Android. With Fire OS, development teams often had to prepare a separate build for the Amazon Appstore. With standard Android, that need shrinks. Organizations that already have their own mobile app can test installation on this device without a separate package.
For home users, the combination of Google Play and Alexa+ means one tablet can handle video, reading, and smart home control. The US price gap between the Tablet 8 and the Tablet 12 Pro is $270, and the Nanomatte screen adds $50, so the choice of model should follow screen and accessory needs.
Consider the following steps before buying in volume.
- Test the apps you use every day on a single sample device, including speed, screen layout, and camera access.
- Ask the seller about system and security update policy, since the support period has not been detailed.
- Budget $20 per device to remove lockscreen ads if tablets will face customers or students.
- Confirm that warranty and after-sales service are available in Indonesia, since a local launch has not been announced.
For schools and campuses, the 11-inch and 12-inch models with the optional pen and keyboard can serve for reading materials and taking notes. Schools should still check that their exam apps, digital libraries, and learning systems run well on the screen. For stores and retail chains, a tablet priced under $250 opens the door to mobile checkout or an aisle catalog, as long as the point-of-sale app supports Android.
Frequently asked questions
Are Alexa Tablets sold in Indonesia?
Not yet announced. Amazon lists sales in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from October 14, and five European countries from October 19. Indonesia is not on that list.
Do Alexa Tablets still run Fire OS?
No. Alexa Tablets run Android and offer Google Play. Amazon describes them as a new product line with a new operating system.
What happens to Fire tablets people already own?
According to Bloomberg’s report as cited by iClarified, Amazon will phase out the Fire line, but devices already in circulation will keep receiving security updates.
Conclusion
The Alexa Tablet shows that low-cost tablets can now run full Android with an AI assistant on the screen. For organizations weighing field devices or classroom hardware, the shift is worth watching, especially once an Indonesian schedule is announced.
