iPhone Duo: Apple's Foldable and Your App Readiness
On this page· 7 sections
Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, on October 16, 2026, in more than 70 countries and regions. The first units arrive on October 23. In the United States, prices start at $1,999 for 256 GB of storage. Official Indonesian pricing and dates could not be confirmed from the sources we read.
Two displays in one device
Apple introduced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, in Cupertino, California. The phone has two Super Retina XDR displays that share the same aspect ratio. Closed, people use a 5.4-inch outer display. Opened, a 7.6-inch inner display appears, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both support ProMotion and Always On, with peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.
Inside is the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process. The frame uses grade 5 titanium with a 3D-printed hinge cover, and the hinge itself has more than 100 components. Apple lists IP68 water and dust resistance and puts Touch ID in the side button. There is one battery on each side of the device. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer one. These are vendor claims and have not been independently tested.

The first Split View on iPhone
On the software side, the phone runs iOS 27 and requires iOS 27.1. The headline feature is Split View, which places two apps side by side on the inner display. Apple calls it a first for iPhone. Users can also open two windows of the same app and save pairs of apps they often use together. StandBy works on either display, even when the phone is not charging.
In its announcement Apple named Netflix, Zoom, and Slack as examples of third-party apps. The phone is eSIM-only worldwide, with no physical SIM card slot.
Pricing, schedule, and supply
US prices vary by storage tier. Sources: Apple and 9to5Mac, October 16, 2026.
- 256 GB: $1,999
- 512 GB: $2,199
- 1 TB: $2,599
- 2 TB: $3,199
Apple also offers payments of $83.29 a month for 24 months, and its Klarna-run Apple Upgrade lease starts at $57.99 a month. The colors are star white and night sky. The Duo Case costs $79, and the Duo Folio with Kickstand costs $129. According to MacRumors, the price is $800 above the iPhone 18 Pro at the same storage.
The rollout is staged. Pre-orders opened on October 16, general availability starts on October 23, and 28 more countries and regions follow on October 30. MacRumors also cited reports of limited supply and delivery estimates slipping for some buyers. Those reports come from commentary and user comments rather than from Apple, so they should be treated as unconfirmed.

What we know about Indonesia
Several Indonesian outlets have reported pre-order schedules through local distributors, but rupiah prices differ from one report to the next and we found no confirmation from Apple. For that reason we do not quote a rupiah price. Prospective buyers should check with an official distributor before ordering.
What Apple asks of app developers
A foldable removes an old assumption: the iPhone screen is no longer a fixed size. In a technical session for developers, Apple said apps can run on the iPhone Duo without recompiling and did not mention a mandatory deadline. Even so, Apple encourages developers to adjust their layouts so apps make use of the wider inner display.
Apple recommends using size classes for layout decisions rather than device type or screen orientation. The outer display in portrait behaves like other iPhones, with compact width and regular height. The inner display is regular in both width and height, which leaves room for sidebars and extra content. Developers are also told to stop referring to a single main screen, because the phone has two displays, and Apple says that practice will be deprecated.
To use the full screen, including the areas under the status bar and the camera, apps need to be built with Xcode 27.1. InfoQ, in a report dated September 24, 2026, noted that safe areas on this device are often asymmetric, so each edge needs to be handled on its own. The Device Hub tool in Xcode 27.1 provides a simulator for testing the open, closed, rotated, and Split View poses.
Standard components adapt on their own. According to Apple, split views (NavigationSplitView in SwiftUI and UISplitViewController in UIKit) collapse into a single stack when the phone is closed and sit side by side when it is open. Tab bars, sheets, popovers, and alerts adapt as well. Apps with custom components need closer testing. The UIRequiresFullScreen key is still honored, but the app still resizes when the device opens or closes.
What this means for mobile app teams
Not every customer will own a device this expensive. Apple also notes that iPhone Mirroring on the Mac can resize apps larger than before, so a flexible layout pays off beyond the iPhone Duo.
For retailers, point-of-sale and inventory apps can use the inner display to show a product list and a basket side by side. For banks and financial services, a wider screen makes it easier to compare transaction details without switching pages. For schools and campuses, two apps side by side means reading material and a notes page can stay open together. Steps a team can take:
- Rebuild the app with Xcode 27.1 and test in Device Hub in every pose.
- Replace hard-coded screen dimensions with size classes and container-based layouts.
- Use built-in navigation components that adapt, such as split views and tab bars.
- Test Split View and asymmetric safe areas before the next release.
