Apple introduced a new iPad mini on October 26, 2026, with an 8.5-inch OLED display, the A20 Pro chip and an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. It starts at $699 in the United States. The water resistance makes the OLED iPad mini a realistic option for work outside the office, from field technicians to pilots.

The largest redesign in the iPad mini’s history

In its press release, Apple called this model the biggest update the iPad mini has ever received. The description holds up, since nearly every major component has changed: the display, chip, enclosure, speakers, front camera and cellular modem.

Pre-orders open on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in 36 countries and regions, including the United States. The device goes on sale on Friday, November 6. Apple has not listed which markets are in the first wave.

An 8.5-inch OLED display

The new screen is an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel, slightly larger than the 8.3-inch display on the previous generation. Apple says the bezels are 24 percent thinner, which keeps the overall footprint the same.

Peak brightness for HDR content reaches 1,200 nits, which Apple says is more than double the previous model. Full-screen brightness for standard content is 600 nits, up from 500 nits according to MacRumors. Minimum brightness drops to 1 nit for reading in the dark. Buyers of the 256GB and 512GB models can also choose nano-texture glass, which cuts glare.

The refresh rate appears unchanged. MacRumors notes that Apple’s specifications make no mention of ProMotion, so the display seems to stay at 60Hz. Anyone used to 120Hz scrolling on an iPad Pro or a high-end phone will notice the difference.

The A20 Pro chip and on-device AI

The iPad mini now uses the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple claims up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance compared with the previous generation, which used the A17 Pro. These figures come from Apple and have not yet been tested independently.

The AI gains come from Neural Accelerators built into each GPU core. The chip configuration also depends on storage. According to MacRumors, the 128GB and 256GB models have a 5-core CPU, while the 512GB model gets a 6-core CPU and two 16-core Neural Engines.

On-device AI matters for apps that process images or text without sending them to a server, such as spotting damage in an inspection photo. Features like that keep working when the signal at a work site is weak.

A thinner, water-resistant body and new radios

The new iPad mini is 5.4 mm thick, down from 6.3 mm on the previous model. Its IP67 rating makes it the first iPad mini with water and dust resistance. Apple tested it under the IEC 60529 standard in laboratory conditions, at a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

Apple attaches several caveats. Water resistance is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear. The device should not be charged while wet, and liquid damage is not covered under warranty.

Other changes focus on communication. The 12MP Center Stage front camera now sits on the long edge, so video calls look natural when the tablet is held horizontally. The speakers have been replaced by what Apple calls an Acoustic Display: woofers work through the screen, and tweeters sit hidden between the glass and the aluminum enclosure, leaving no speaker holes.

On the networking side, the N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular models use Apple’s own C2 modem, which the company says delivers up to 50 percent faster cellular data than the previous generation, with eSIM support. According to MacRumors, fast charging reaches 50 percent in about 30 minutes with a 35W or higher adapter, sold separately.

Comparison table of iPad mini A17 Pro and iPad mini A20 Pro: 8.3-inch display to 8.5-inch OLED, 6.3 mm to 5.4 mm thick, no rating to IP67, Wi-Fi 6E to Wi-Fi 7, starting price $599 to $699

A second price increase this year

In the United States, the Wi-Fi model starts at $699 and the Wi-Fi + Cellular model at $849. Education pricing starts at $649. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, in two colors, midnight and starlight.

The price has drawn attention. MacRumors points out that the previous iPad mini launched in 2024 at $499, rose to $599 in June 2026 and now starts at $699. That makes two increases to the starting price within the same year.

Pricing and availability for Indonesia have not been announced. Kumparan reported the same, and Apple’s Indonesian product page only asks visitors to check back for availability. Rupiah figures circulating online are currency conversions that do not account for taxes or distributor pricing.

A small tablet for work outside the office

In its launch materials, Apple pointed to several use cases: pilots checking electronic flight bags in the cockpit, technicians working in the field, and people working outdoors on a rainy day. Those examples show Apple aiming the device at professionals who work away from a desk.

Similar needs are common in Indonesia. Power grid technicians inspect substations during the rainy season, factory staff log machine conditions in dusty areas, and warehouse teams count stock while moving between aisles. Many organizations have relied on regular tablets in thick cases, or on expensive rugged tablets.

The IP67 iPad mini sits between those options: compact, protected against splashes and dust, and running the same operating system as other iPads. It is still not a rugged tablet. The IP67 rating says nothing about drop resistance, and the warranty excludes liquid damage.

Siri AI lacks Indonesian support for now

Apple is selling the new iPad mini alongside the latest generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. According to TechCrunch, Siri can now draw on a user’s personal context and understand what is on screen.

Teams in Indonesia face a clear limitation. Siri AI is still in beta in iPadOS 27.2 and is available only in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Apple’s list of Apple Intelligence languages does not include Indonesian either. Apple also notes that some server-based features have daily usage limits.

What this means for field teams and app developers

Organizations considering the iPad mini for field work should start with how their staff actually work each day. The following steps can help.

Four steps to assess a tablet for field work: map working conditions, test apps on a weak signal, manage devices centrally, and calculate total cost

  1. Map working conditions. Note whether staff work in rain, in dusty areas or under strong sunlight. IP67 and 1,200 nits of brightness address part of that, but drops and impacts still call for a protective case.
  2. Test apps on a weak signal. Inspection, stock-taking and checklist apps should keep working offline and sync once a connection returns. This principle sits at the core of mobile app development for teams that are always on the move.
  3. Manage devices centrally. Tablets that leave the office are easier to lose. Put device management, remote lock and password policies in place before handing devices out.
  4. Calculate the total cost. Beyond the device, include cases, a 35W adapter if fast charging matters, data plans for cellular models and after-sales coverage, since liquid damage is not covered by the warranty.

For developers, the A20 Pro makes it practical to run small AI models directly on the tablet. Examples include identifying the type of damage in a photo of an electrical panel, reading license plates in a factory parking area or summarizing inspection notes. Processing on the device also keeps data on the tablet, which matters in industrial automation settings with strict confidentiality rules.

Apps that depend on Siri AI or Apple Intelligence cannot yet serve Indonesian-speaking users. Language features should still be built into the app itself.

Apple is also changing screen sizes across its lineup. In mid-October, Merakit covered the iPhone Duo and app readiness for foldable phones. Responsive app layouts make it easier for development teams to keep up with changes like these.

Frequently asked questions

When will the OLED iPad mini arrive in Indonesia?

Not yet announced. Apple opens pre-orders in 36 countries and regions from October 28, 2026, but its Indonesian page does not yet show a price or availability date.

Can the new iPad mini be used in the rain?

The IP67 rating means the device passed laboratory tests at a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes, and Apple itself lists working outdoors on a rainy day as a use case. Even so, Apple warns that resistance may decrease over time and that liquid damage is not covered by the warranty.

How does the A20 Pro iPad mini differ from the previous model?

The main changes are the 8.5-inch OLED display, the A20 Pro chip, a 5.4 mm IP67 body, Acoustic Display speakers, a front camera on the long edge, Wi-Fi 7 and the C2 modem. The display appears to remain at 60Hz, and the starting price rises to $699.

Conclusion

The A20 Pro iPad mini combines a brighter screen, a chip better suited to AI and a water-resistant body in a size that is easy to carry. For organizations with many field staff, it is worth a look, with caveats on price, the 60Hz display and language support. If your team is building field apps that need to keep working on a weak signal, Merakit is happy to talk it through.
