Reddit Ends RSS and Public API: What Developers Should Do
On this page· 7 sections
Reddit will stop serving RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 and will close public API access in stages through March 2027. The company describes both as common routes for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. Third-party apps, bots and monitoring tools that rely on either one need a plan now.
The timeline for Reddit’s RSS and API shutdown
Reddit announced the changes on September 30, 2026, as reported by TechCrunch. RSS is a feed format that lets a reader or app receive the latest posts from a subreddit without opening the site. An API is the official doorway programs use to pull data from another service automatically.
According to a summary of Reddit’s announcement by PPC Land, the dates are:
- October 31, 2026: Reddit stops accepting new public API access requests.
- November 10, 2026: progress update and deadline reminder on migration.
- November 13, 2026: RSS feeds stop being served.
- November 30, 2026: registration closes for the migration incentive program.
- January 12, 2027: access starts to close for apps and users that have not registered or responded to Reddit’s outreach.
- March 2027: public access closes for all remaining apps and users.

The sources word the January date slightly differently. TechCrunch writes that developers who have not registered lose access, while PPC Land says Reddit’s post only states that access starts to close. January 12 is therefore best read as the beginning of cut-offs, and access may not last until that day.
Reddit is also restricting Old Reddit, the legacy interface, to logged-in users who have used it in the past six months. Moderators keep access. According to TechCrunch, that window was originally 90 days and was extended to six months.
Reddit’s reasons and who is affected
Reddit says RSS has become a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. According to Decrypt, the company also calls logged-out access the biggest source of abusive scraping on Old Reddit.
Some observers link the move to Reddit’s data licensing business. TechCrunch notes that “other revenue,” mainly AI licensing deals, grew 24 percent year over year to $43 million in the second quarter of 2026. PPC Land puts total revenue for the quarter at $804.9 million, which makes licensing about 5.3 percent. The connection is the TechCrunch author’s inference, not a reason Reddit has given.
Reddit began charging for API access in 2023. PPC Land also points to a licensing deal with Google, reportedly worth about $60 million a year, and a partnership with OpenAI in May 2024.
The impact differs by group.
- Moderators: Reddit points them to a Devvit app called Discord Relay to replace RSS-based moderation alerts. It also supports Slack.
- Ordinary RSS readers: Reddit says, “If you use RSS for feeds outside of a community you moderate, there is no replacement.” Readers in that position will need another way to follow subreddits.
- Apps, bots and monitoring tools: all need to register and move to Reddit’s developer platform, or sign a written agreement.
- AI assistants and social listening products: according to TechCrunch, products that use Reddit data will need commercial deals once public access ends.

The migration path Reddit offers
Reddit steers developers to Devvit, its developer platform. Devvit apps are built in TypeScript, and PPC Land reports that Python is not supported. Reddit offers a migration guide for PRAW, the Python library many Reddit bots use, along with support from PRAW experts.
The incentive is a $1 million App Migration Program. It pays $1,000 to each eligible app that applies before November 30, 2026 and migrates successfully. Migrated apps may also qualify for free hosting. According to PPC Land, Devvit documentation cites developer funds of up to $167,000 per app.
Reddit says more than 14,000 apps and bots have registered. DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot and RemindMeBot are named as finished or nearly finished with migration. Reddit has said partners with written agreements, such as accessibility apps or mobile clients, will get exemptions.
Not every workload has a clear path. PPC Land records developers reporting compute and language-library limits on Devvit, and one citing an AGPL license incompatibility. One developer who negotiated for five months said they received a $10,000 offer with liability terms they found unfavorable. Reddit has not described individual contracts.
What this means for developers and media-monitoring teams in Indonesia
The sources do not address users in Indonesia specifically, so this section offers general considerations. Government communications offices, social media agencies, university researchers and app developers may pull public conversation data through RSS or the API to track issues. If any of your tools use Reddit, these steps are worth finishing before October 31 and November 13.
- Inventory your data sources. List every script, dashboard and service that pulls data from Reddit, including ones built by vendors or other teams. Find out whether each uses RSS, the API or ordinary web pages.
- Register the apps you still need. Reddit says registration helps tell apps apart from human accounts. Apps that have not registered or answered Reddit’s messages risk being cut off from January 2027.
- Choose a path. Options are migrating to Devvit, signing a written agreement with Reddit, or dropping Reddit as a source. For commercial monitoring tools, a paid data agreement may turn out to be the only route.
- Avoid unauthorized data collection. Reddit’s Rule 8 prohibits scraping without a formal agreement. Apps also may not display or store content that users deleted or that was removed for rule violations.
- Design data sources that are easy to swap. Keep data collection separate from analysis so that one closed source does not break an entire dashboard. A similar lesson appeared when US banks began limiting AI agents: platforms now decide for themselves who may access their data.

Teams building data integrations can strengthen their architecture through web development and data analytics services. Agencies that track public opinion can also review these needs alongside digital government solutions.
Frequently asked questions
When does Reddit’s RSS stop working?
Reddit stops serving RSS on November 13, 2026. Moderators can use the Discord Relay app to replace moderation alerts. For RSS readers outside the communities they moderate, Reddit says there is no replacement.
Will every third-party app stop working immediately?
No. Reddit stops accepting new access requests on October 31, 2026. Access starts to close on January 12, 2027 for apps that have not registered or responded to Reddit’s messages, and the remaining public access closes in March 2027. Partners with written agreements may receive exemptions.
Can researchers and developers still use Reddit data?
Yes, but through official routes. The options are Reddit’s developer platform for eligible apps, or a commercial agreement for larger data needs. Collecting data without an agreement is prohibited by Reddit’s rules.
Closing
Reddit’s decision shows that access to data from large platforms can change on short notice. If your organization relies on public conversation data for monitoring or research, get in touch with the Merakit team to discuss a data-source architecture that withstands change.
